The year 2023 in review

Teejo Teejo December 31, 2023

2023 was a great year for the Bayreuth Mountain Club! This year was a year of many firsts and where the Mountain Club grew to something bigger.

A year of many firsts

On January 21st we celebrated our 5th Birthday with a cold hike to the Kleiner Kulm in Pegnitz. We also went into the water for the first time with the organization of three canoe/kayak events this summer. We were able to refine and streamline the Orienteering game piloted last year. This year we organized 7 more orienteering varieties including night orienteering, snow orienteering, phone orienteering and a mixture of all of those! And if that weren't enough firsts already, we also had two camping trips and two overnight weekends in the Mountain Rescue Hut in Fleckl. And to end on a high note, we celebrated our 100th event in the snow at the Ochsenkopf, I couldn't have wished for a better way the end the year.

2023 in numbers

We had 220 new members signing up to the website. Of those, 57 actually joined us on events.
We organized 24 events, a new yearly record! Of those, 7 were orienteering events, we went canoeing twice and kayaking once. 4 of those 24 events were overnight events, either in a tent or a hut.

The hottest hike we did was 33˚C on average (Trebgast Hike) with a peak temperature of 43˚C. The coldest temperature we got to endure was -5˚C (5 Year Anniversary hike). The highest point we visited was 1024m (top of Ochsenkopf) during the Halloween Orienteering and Event #100. The longest we’ve been outside was during the second Canoeing trip on the 4th of July, we stayed out for a whole 10,5 hours! The longest distance hiked was during the Craimoos Weiher hike, a whopping 27km!

On those 24 events we had a total of 299 participants (90 unique members).
Those 90 people walked a combined total of 3906 km and ascended 127 km!
We walked for a sum of 54 days.

We took 1806 photos of you. Some of which you’ll find back in in the video recap up above.

Thank you!

Without any and all of you it would have never been such a fun year full of extraordinary events. 79 people were crazy enough to join our hikes, canoe and camping trips. Any many of you are showing up almost every event, much love for you and a big thank you for all the good times.

But my biggest thank you goes out to those who supported the Mountain Club with their time and effort this year. Andrew, Sara and Mirna, I very much appreciate the energy you put into events, be it organizing, hiding boxes, explaining game rules to participants and everything else you did to make the events unforgettable for all of us. It's what pushes the Mountain Club to be something greater than one person alone could achieve. Thank you! ❤️

All that rests me to say is that I hope everyone enjoyed the events just as much as we did. We will do our stinking best to make 2024 at least as fun and filled with events as 2023. You can expect more hikes in any and all weather. More orienteering games, we aim to look for new locations to tweak the gameplay even more. I have no doubt that once the temperatures get warmer we will be going onto the water once again so stay tuned for canoe and kayak events. But for now it's still winter so we hope for a bit more snow so we can have some fun snow filled events like snowshoe hiking and maybe even sledding. Stay tuned for more exciting things to come!
