Watzmann Hocheck
Hiking

Watzmann Hocheck

Berchtesgadener Land

About This Route

The Watzmann is the 3rd highest mountain of Germany and the highest located entirely on German territory. The mountain has three main peaks; Hocheck (2,651 m), Mittelspitze (Middle Peak, 2,713 m) and Südspitze (South Peak, 2,712 m). This hike focuses on the most easy accessible one, Hocheck, which can be reached without any climbing equipment. For the other two peaks you'll need a via ferrata to safely reach them.

The route starts at the foot of Watzmann in Ramsau bei Brechtesgaden at ±650m. From there on you'll start 1300m ascent to the Watzmannhaus. This is a technically easy, though though, hike on regular hiking paths. The Watzmannhaus at 1930m is a great stop to refuel on food and drinks and gather your energy for the next part. If you want to split up the route the Watzmannhaus also offers sleeping accommodation.

From there on out it will all be a rocky path, you don't need any climbing equipment but a good shoe and secure foothold are important here. After hiking/climbing another 700m up to the Hocheck peak of 2651m you get a beautiful view at the surrounding mountains which are, with the exception of the other peaks, all lower than where you are.
