On Saturday February 24th 2024 a horrific event occurred. One of the hikers mutated into a human flesh craving zombie, biting others in the process. Below is the documentation of what occurred before said night, what happened during and how it changed everything going forward. Reader beware, this is not for the faint of heart.

Interactive infection graph
The interactive graphic below shows how the infection is spreading in real-time. After every event when the infection has spread further, the graphic gets updated. It visualizes who bit who and at what event. If you hover over a person with your mouse it will bring up a window where it shows at what event they got infected and also the name of who bit them. Additionally on hover, all people who got infected in the same event as the hovered on person color purple.
The outbreak

Dr. Hanna Lundqvist
At Germany's greenest campus, University Bayreuth, a renowned neuro scientist, was conducting research on a cure for a rare neurological disease. Dr. Hanna Lundqvist, a brilliant scientist, was at the forefront of this groundbreaking research. But little did she know that her quest for a cure would inadvertently unleash a catastrophic chain of events.
What made her cure so effective were state of the art nano bots, these could find and isolate the misfiring neurons, thus basically eliminating the cause of the patient's symptoms by nearly 99%. The research had proven a great success in animals and first human trials. So when, what is now known as Patient Zero, heard about the experimental treatment he volunteered right away.
Patient Zero
Patient Zero had been diagnosed as a child with a rare neurological disease which made him a compulsive hiker. Every waking moment he had to move, couldn't sit still and even the sparse moments when he was able to sleep, all he could dream about was hiking. This disease took over his life, his relationships and made it impossible for him to hold a job. So you can imagine how over the moon he was when he found out about Dr. Lundqvist's research. He didn't think twice about it, and signed up for the experimental medical trials right away.
And so the treatment started. Patient Zero noticed drastic changes after only two sessions. His dreams were no longer about hiking and he was able to have conversations with people that were not only about hiking gear and long distance routes. For the first time in his life he had a feeling of normality.
Meanwhile Dr. Lundqvist was working in her office, surrounded by petri dishes of her patients to monitor for progress and any deviations. Moon light came in through the window and illuminated the petri dishes. When she looked up from her microscope her eyes grew big in horror. She leaned forward to inspect what caught her eye. One of the petri dishes had turned completely black. They were Patient Zero's cells. She grabbed a sample and put it under her microscope, and what she saw there was beyond anything she had seen before. Without hesitation she jumped up and reached for the phone.

She had to act fast because she knew that Patient Zero rarely hiked alone and would definitely be outside with a clear full moon night like this. She tried to call Patient Zero, but was unsuccessful. Fearing for the people in his vicinity she tried to find out who else might be in the group with him. She tried to call them all, but with out any luck. Until...
Your phone rings. Pick it up!

The aftermath
On the fateful night, as Patient Zero was outside hiking in the Moonlight, the side effects of the treatment began to take hold of him. He succumbed to the transformation. His flesh turned pale, his eyes turned white. He lost his sense of smell but gained the unnatural urge for human flesh. His jaw started twitching uncontrollably and his gaze locked onto the other hikers in the group. Four fell victim that night to Patient Zero. This was the start of the zombie outbreak within the Bayreuth Mountain Club. From now on, everyone who hikes with an infected person has to chance to get infected.
New zombie achievements
This zombie outbreak brings three new badges with it to achieve! The first is when you are being bitten by another hiker that is already infected. This means you get infected and you receive the Infected badge. From this point forwards you can also infect other people on future events. Once you have bitten 5 people you receive the Super Spreader achievement. If you manage to attend 5 events without being bitten you get the achievement Lucky Dodger.
All zombie related achievements are chance based. That means that's it's about luck and less about hard work to earn these badges in comparison to the other regular achievements. Just make sure to show up to events and this increases your chance of getting the zombie badges!
